I love America (TLDNR)
I found myself rooting for Tim Tebow today passively, and was thrilled that he pulled off an amazing comeback (after playing terribly). My housemate asked me why I was so enthusiastic.
“He’s a huge Christian” I said. “It’s nice.”
Nice, said the Jew who went to all Jewish schools until college. “Nice”. I am patronizing Tim Tebow and America with my simple fuzzy admiration. America has spoiled me enough that I, a Jew, have gotten so cocky and comfortable in America that I feel like a majority member.
Another thing: my favorite professor is an Arab from Jordan where he served in government and the army. He teaches a gleefully informative politically realist approach. After making a particularly insightful and even-handed comment about Israel and Egypt in the ‘67 war he mentioned offhand “this is why I teach in America, so I can say these things.” To my right was a Christian friend, on my left was an Egyptian acquaintance and myself. All of us like the class. I’ve had drinks with both.
And another thing! Hermain Cain. I can’t for the life of me understand this guy’s appeal; he’s a completely unqualified idiot worthy of only exciting people for no reason. But that’s what Republicans thought about Obama! They weren’t being racist, they just had opinions. And hey, they like Cain! They aren’t racist- they may be wrong, but they aren’t that racist. That’s pretty cool.
So yeah, America has problems but generally we are pretty cool.
